| Asiatic Lions |

Asiatic lions live in the wild in one place: a tiny forest in southern India. Interestingly, they used to be everywhere, lions that is, even France. Lion hunting as a sign of bravery did a lot to kill off lions, and also the cutting down of forests.
Lions are different from tigers in that they're not so good at adapting to living around people. Best at adapting to living around people are jaguars and leopards, although not necessarily in a good way. Whereas lions only attack and eat people at times of extreme famine and hardship, a leopard will run off with your child, and they're sneaky about it.
Here the biggest thing we've got is a bobcat, although there aren't many of those anymore.

Ron and I saw one at night in the Ozarks this summer, and that was probably the first time I've seen a bobcat. We do see coyotes fairly often, though.
There are rumors bobcats occasionally come around our neighborhood, but not so much since the city has built up so much in recent years.
I've always liked big cats, and have wondered about how people can live with these creatures in a synergistic way. |
